SSP – Safe & Sound Protocol
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a safe, deep-acting method that stimulates the vagus nerve. It is a listening protocol developed based on Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory. This protocol uses our auditory system for a deep healing connection with the autonomic nervous system.
The “vagus nerve” is the most important part of our autonomic nervous system. This nerve comes from the brain and runs to organs in the chest and abdomen, where it oversees essential body functions such as mood regulation, immune response, digestion, breathing and heart rate.
Stimulation of the vagus nerve can send a signal to your body to relax, to be less in your head. This can lead to lasting improvements in mood, well-being and resilience. Listening is an activity in the here and now that the body understands. By doing so, we promote a state of calmness, safety and regulation .
The SSP is a five-hour treatment designed to train and regulate the autonomic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety. This is done by listening to filtered music through headphones, which trains and challenges the muscles in the middle ear. The filter is an algorithm that processes high and low tones (=danger) from the music, training the brain how safe feels (mid tones).
Based on the Poly Vagal Theory of Dr. Steven Porges
Use of the SSP requires an evaluation and baseline measurement plus extensive psychoeducation on the underlying poly-vagal theory. The SSP approach is not for everyone and cannot be done without guidance to be effective.
Initially, we listen together in a few one-on-one sessions. With over-the-ear headphones to exclude distracting sounds. After that, remote listening can be done independently at home with headphones via the SSP app, still under supervision, of course.
The use of the SSP protocol is included in a series of 5 BodyMind sessions.
In addition, a subscription can be taken out for €40 per month with a minumum of 6 months.
We often see improvements in social engagement and in the regulation of both physical and emotional states within a short period of time. The SSP protocol is in support of BodyMind treatments and not as a stand-alone treatment.
